Iroshizuku Ink

Pilot's Iroshizuku inks take their names from the Japanese landscape, and most of them read like a short poem: Tsuki-yo, a moonlit night; Kon-peki, the deep blue of a clear summer sky; Yama-budo, the dark crimson of wild mountain grapes. Iroshizuku itself means "drops of colour", which is about as accurate as an ink's name has ever been.

The ink is calm and well behaved. It runs smoothly from fine Japanese nibs and broad Western ones alike, and it rinses out of a pen with plain water when you fancy a change of colour. You never need to save it for best; it is just as content in a daily notebook as in a letter. The bottle is heavy glass, cool in the hand, with a hollow in its base that lets you draw up the last few millilitres, and it tends to outlive the ink.

We stock Iroshizuku in three forms:

  • 50ml bottles: the largest size, for pens filled with a converter or a piston.
  • 15ml mini bottles: a sensible way to try a colour before committing to the larger bottle.
  • Cartridges: packs of six, for pens that take Pilot cartridges.

If you're choosing a first colour, our guide to Japanese fountain pen inks walks through the Iroshizuku range alongside Sailor Shikiori.
